Be Prepared for Winter
Here are some helpful tips to help you manage your heating oil over the busy winter months.
Monitor the level of heating oil in your storage tank
Forgetting to check your oil tank or gauge is the biggest reason for running dry and requiring an urgent delivery. Remember you use more heating oil on a daily basis during the colder months and it is easy to get caught out. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to check your oil level every couple of weeks. When you get down to a quarter tank left, go ahead and order your heating oil.
Make Sure Your Oil Tank is Fit for Purpose
The condition of your fuel storage tank can often be overlooked when it comes preparing for the winter months. When your OFTEC engineer services your boiler, make sure he/she checks the condition of your tank.
You should also check for signs of damage to your tank on a monthly basis. Tanks are more likely to rupture in extreme weather conditions – cold or heat. Look for any signs of change or damage to the tank such as cracks, splits, bulges, whitening or vegetation die-back.
You also need to make sure that your tank is safe for our drivers to fill. They will not fill any tank they deem unfit for purpose or that could cause them an injury.
Service Your Boiler
You should get your boiler serviced every year. An annual service reduces the chance of an unexpected breakdown and will detect problems before they become a major issue.
Plan early for Christmas
We always see an increase in orders in December due to Christmas and New Year. This increase can cause delivery times to extend beyond our normal five working days. Make sure you put your order in with plenty of time before Christmas to avoid the impact pf any extended lead times.
Plan Ahead for Bad Weather
Some of the rural areas we delivery to are inaccessible in icy or snowy weather. Keep an eye on the changing weather forecasts and order before the start of any bad weather.
