What is red diesel?

Red diesel is a lower-tax fuel designed for off-road vehicles and specialised machinery that don’t use public infrastructure, as well as for heating buildings that aren’t operated commercially. The fuel’s bright red hue is neither natural nor a cosmetic nicety. Instead, it contains chemical markers that make it easy to identify during inspections and deter misuse. Failure to comply can carry significant penalties, ranging from a one-off fine and backdated repayments to criminal charges in serious or repeat offences.

Who can use red diesel?

Amid government drives to achieve net zero by 2050, the rules surrounding red diesel are tighter than ever. Today, under Excise Notice 75, entitlement depends on two key factors: the type of vehicle, vessel, or engine being used, and what it’s being used for.

Vehicles must either be for agricultural use, designed to operate on a railway, have a specialised application, or be unlicensed. However, they must also be involved in at least one of the following:

  • Agriculture, horticulture, aquatic farming, or forestry
  • Cutting hedges, verges, or trees that border public roads
  • Clearing frost, ice, snow, or flooding, including transporting equipment
  • Work on land maintained by a community amateur sports club (CASC)
  • Activities on a golf course or driving range
  • Operation or maintenance of travelling fairs or circuses
  • Heating or generating electricity in non-commercial premises
  • Boats and vessels (all except private pleasure craft)

As your dedicated red diesel supplier, we’re here to help you understand whether you’re eligible for this fuel type, and find alternative options if you’re not.

How much is red diesel?

Like all fuel types, red diesel costs move with market conditions and can change day by day. The biggest influence is the global oil market, where shifts in supply and demand, geopolitical events, and distribution pressures all play a role. On top of this, UK-specific factors such as duty rules, seasonal demand, and regional supply dynamics can also affect what you pay.

Operational factors matter just as much. The quantity you order, how frequently you top up, and whether you require a scheduled or emergency red diesel delivery can all influence the final price per litre. That’s why working with a reputable red diesel supplier – a partner that understands both the global picture and local logistics – can make a genuinely meaningful difference.

At Moorland Fuels, we focus on helping customers secure consistent value rather than chasing short-term price swings, combining strong supply relationships with transparent pricing and practical advice on when and how to buy.
