Global Oil Prices Fall – But What Does It Mean for Fuel Prices?

There’s been a noticeable shift in global oil markets this week, with prices falling following news announced by Donald Trump of a temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran.

While this is a positive step towards easing geopolitical tensions, as the global crude oil market is the biggest impact affecting fuel costs, many Moorland Fuels customers across Devon and Cornwall may be wondering: will this bring my fuel costs down straight away?

A welcome dip in global oil prices

After recent uncertainty, markets reacted quickly to news of the two-week ceasefire. One of the key developments is the focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz – a vital route for global oil supply.

As a result, Brent crude prices dropped, reflecting reduced concern about supply disruptions.

Why fuel prices may take longer to fall

Although this is encouraging news, it’s important to understand that changes in global oil prices don’t instantly translate to lower fuel prices here in the UK.

That’s because there are several stages between crude oil being traded and heating oil or red diesel arriving at your tank.  This means there’s typically a delay before price reductions are reflected at the distributor level.

Volatility hasn’t gone away

While the ceasefire has helped calm markets for now, the situation remains uncertain.

Oil markets are still highly sensitive to global events, and prices can move quickly if tensions rise again or supply concerns return.

So, whilst this drop in global oil prices is a step in the right direction, we are cautious as it doesn’t remove the risk of further fluctuations.

What should customers do?

For our heating oil users, the key message is to stay aware and plan ahead where possible.

  • Keep an eye on price trends over the coming days and weeks
  • If your tank is below a quarter full, book a delivery now rather than waiting
  • Anticipate gradual savings in time, not instant pre-war pricing
  • Consider becoming one of our direct debit customers by joining our Cosy Heating Club, which will help spread the cost throughout the year with simple, manageable monthly payments
  • If you are struggling with heating oil costs the government announced support for low-income families with funding to be distributed by local authorities via the Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF), which came into effect from 1 April

Our red diesel and white diesel customers should:

  • Keep an eye on tank levels and avoid running the tanks too low
  • Don’t put off buying fuel because you are trying to predict where the prices might go. Prices can jump overnight on geopolitical news or supply shocks.
  • Know your usage pattern so you can plan around your fuel needs.
